Who Owns Black Art?
The Bureau for Cultural Reclamation is a multimedia strategic cultural intervention that attempts to provide solutions for how to understand the case of reparations with regard to culture art and the repatriation of African diasporic objects both in the U.S. and around the world. In collaboration with artist teams and strategic partners, the goal is to create a Bureau that investigates how to repatriate African diasporic artifacts through interactive experiences trainings, toolkits, digital events, art commissions, etc.

“This is not just about the return of African art, [...] When someone’s stolen your soul, it’s very difficult to survive as a people.”
Prince Kum’a Ndumbe III of the Duala people in Cameroon on the restitution of African Artifacts from Europe
From the story of Yaa Asentewaa and the Golden Stool nearly stolen from the Ashanti People to the frought relationship of Western museums housing Black art, this roundtable discussion explores and defines the many ways African and Black Art, artifacts, sacred objects and human remains are collected, displayed and used historically and in the present day. How are reparations policy wins connected to wins in cultural restitution, such as the return of looted Benin Bronzes? This expert panel of international leaders in the arts and racial justice will address these questions.
Discussion will delve into the surrounding economy and the uncounted mental, emotional and spiritual costs of the too often exploitative nature of Black cultural production. Additionally panelists will explore how a systemic process of restitution and reconnection of Afrodiasporic peoples from past harms is necessary for healing Black communities thriving into the future
